CHICAGO, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- Chicago White Sox Manager Ozzie Guillen has been given a contract extension through the 2012 season.
The extension, announced by General Manager Ken Williams, came near the end of a miserable season where the White Sox are mired in last place in the American League Central Division.
“They gave me another chance to do what we're supposed to do as a winning organization," the controversial and outspoken Guillen said on the team’s Web site Tuesday.
“I was a surprise, too, when I was named to this position,” Williams told the Chicago Sun-Times. “We do things here that we think are right for our own reasons, and we don't do things haphazardly.”
The extension comes two years after Guillen, who had a 16-year playing career, guided the White Sox to the 2005 World Series title.
He was a three-time all-star and played for the White Sox 13 seasons.
Guillen was named the 37th manager in team history in November 2003.
