BUCHAREST, Romania, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- Igor Andreev, a two-time runner-up in the event, was upset Wednesday during second-round play at the $400,000 Romanian Open clay-court tennis tournament.
Andreev, seeded fifth, finished second in the tournament in both 2004 and 2005, but didn't make it to the third round this year, losing to Marc Gicquel, 6-4, 6-3.
Gicquel moved into Friday's quarterfinals against Gael Monfils, who dispatched Vassallo Arguello, 6-4, 6-4, in their second-round match.
Another quarterfinal Friday sends sixth-seeded Gilles Simon against Hugo Armando. Simon advanced with a 6-4, 6-2, win over Evgeny Korolev while Armando beat Andreas Seppi, 6-0, 6-3, in the second round.
Thursday's second-round action features Romanian crowd favorites Victor Hanescu, who is to play eighth-seeded Albert Montanes; and Andrei Pavel, who is paired against No. 3-seeded Potito Starace.
