Federer to join Swiss Davis Cup team

LONDON, Sept. 11 (UPI) -- World No. 1 Roger Federer, who bypassed Davis Cup play ahead of Grand Slam events, said he will play for Switzerland in a playoff against the Czech Republic.

Federer sat out the earlier Davis Cup matches, focusing on the biggest tournaments on the tennis calendar. He won the Australian Open, Wimbledon and U.S. Open and finished second in the French Open.

With the U.S. Open over, he said he would join the Swiss team of Stanislas Wawrinka, Michael Lammer and Yves Allegro in a best-of-five series against the Czechs Sept. 21-23 in Prague. The winner of the event, to be played indoors on carpet, will earn a spot in the 16-team Davis Cup World Group in 2008.

The Czechs are expected to counter with Tomas Berdych, Radek Stepanek, Lukas Dlouhy and Martin Damm.
