Rumford wins playoff at Crans Montana

CRANS MONTANA, Switzerland, Sept. 9 (UPI) -- Brett Rumford sank a birdie putt at the first playoff hole Sunday to win the European Tour’s Omega European Masters at Crans Montana, Switzerland.

Rumford beat Phillip Archer after missing a potential tournament-winning five-foot par putt at the 17th hole in regulation. When he finally won the event, he pumped his right fist, a show of relief at having gained his third tour title.

“It's been a pretty tough year," Rumford said. “This has proved very emotional and I had to have five minutes in a back room when it all hit me. I've been trying hard, grinding week in week out for not much but at last it's all come together this week."

Rumford (68) and Archer (65) ended 72 holes at 16-under-par 268. 2006 champion Bradley Dredge (66) was third at 15-under 269.

Dredge made a double bogey at the 12th hole, leaving him one-stroke short of making it a three-way playoff.

Sion E. Bebb (68) was alone in fourth at 14-under 270.
