NFL: San Diego 14, Chicago 3

SAN DIEGO, Sept. 9 (UPI) -- Philip Rivers passed for 190 yards and LaDainian Tomlinson threw a touchdown pass Sunday as the San Diego Chargers shut down Chicago, 14-3.

The defending NFC champion Bears did virtually nothing with their running game and Tomlinson, too, had problems carrying the football. Tomlinson -- who set an NFL single-season rushing touchdowns record last season, and who led the league in ground yardage -- gained just 25 yards on 17 carries Sunday.

However, he had a hand in both the Chargers' scores -- throwing a 17-yard pass to Antonio Gates for a touchdown in the second period and running it in from seven yards out in the fourth quarter.

The win came in Norv Turner's debut as San Diego coach after he had unsuccessful previous tenures with Washington and Oakland.

The Chargers, who earned a bye in the first round of the playoffs last year and then lost their first post-season contest, held Chicago running back Cedric Benson to 42 yards on 19 carries.

Benson took over as the featured running back this season after sharing time last year with Thomas Jones.
