PHOENIX, Sept. 9 (UPI) -- Justin Upton's two-run homer and Tony Clark's two-run double, both in the seventh inning Sunday, rallied the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 6-5 win over St. Louis.
The Diamondbacks won their fifth straight and increased their lead in the National League West to three games over San Diego. St. Louis has lost three in a row and fell three games behind division-leading Milwaukee in the Central.
St. Louis scored four times in the third to take a 4-2 lead, and that is the way it stayed until the seventh, when the Diamondbacks got to reliever Ryan Franklin (4-3).
Franklin came in for Kip Wells after Wells gave up a one-out double to Chris Snyder. After Upton greeted Franklin with a homer to left-center, Jeff Salazar doubled, Eric Byrnes drew a walk and Clark doubled both of them home.
Yusmeiro Petit (3-4) threw two innings of one-hit relief to get the victory and Jose Valverde, despite giving up a run in the ninth, picked up his 45th save.
