COL FB: West Va. 48, Marshall 23

HUNTINGTON, W.Va., Sept. 8 (UPI) -- Pat White threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third Saturday as No. 4 West Virginia escaped with a tougher-than-expected 48-23 victory over Marshall.

The Mountaineers (2-0) trailed 13-6 at the half, but pulled away by scoring six second-half touchdowns.

White completed 13-of-18 passes for 149 yards, and added 125 rushing yards on 18 attempts.

Star WVU running back Steve Slaton scored twice on 24 carries for 146 yards, while Noel Devine scored two touchdowns on 76 yards on just five carries.

Darius Reynaud was White's primary target, scoring twice on eight receptions for 126 yards as the Mountaineers beat their smaller in-state rival for the second straight season.

Marshall got two touchdown throws from quarterback Bernard Morris on 19-of-29 passing for 256 yards, and Darius Marshall ran for 80 yards on 11 attempts.

Tight end Cody Slate scored once on five catches for 82 yards as the Thundering Herd (0-2) played much better after a season-opening 31-3 loss to Miami-Florida.
