DETROIT, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- Curtis Granderson, who already had 20 doubles and 20 triples this season, hit his 20th home run Friday night as the Detroit Tigers defeated Seattle, 6-1.
Granderson became only the sixth player in major league history to reach 20 in all three statistical categories during a single season.
It was Detroit's third straight win and it pushed the Tigers into second place ahead of Seattle in the American League wild-card race. Detroit began the night three games behind the New York Yankees in that chase.
Justin Verlander (16-5) gave up a run on seven hits over eight innings, while the loss went to Miguel Batista (13-11). He coughed up six runs on nine hits in 6 2/3 innings.
Granderson led off the Detroit first with an infield single and scored on a double by Placido Polanco. Granderson hit his home run, a solo shot, leading off the seventh.
George Brett and Willie Mays are among the group to have had 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season.
