AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Sept. 5 (UPI) -- Plenette Pierson scored 26 points and had 10 rebounds Wednesday as Detroit rallied to win the opener of the WNBA Finals over Phoenix 108-100.

The teams produced the most points ever scored in a WNBA Finals contest.

Detroit will host the second game in the best-of-five series Saturday.

Katie Smith added 22 points and Kara Braxton had 19, her highest total of the season. Phoenix was led by Penny Taylor with 32 points.

Phoenix jumped to an 11-point lead in the opening quarter, but Detroit scored the final eight points of the period to trail by just three going into the second. Detroit built a six-point halftime cushion and put the game away late with a 12-0 run.
