BOSTON, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- Nick Markakis hit a three-run homer Friday night, as the Baltimore Orioles built a six-run lead and held on to defeat Boston, 9-8.
The Orioles ended a nine-game losing streak.
Kurt Birkins (1-1) picked up the win in relief, giving up a run on three hits in three innings. Baltimore starter Radhames Liz lasted only three innings.
Julian Tavares (7-10) was a late replacement for scheduled Boston starter Tim Wakefield, who was suffering from a sore back. Tavares gave up four runs on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings to take the loss.
It was Boston's fourth straight setback, but the Red Sox remained five games in front of the New York Yankees in the American League East, as the Yankees fell to Tampa Bay, 9-1.
The home run by Markakis came in a five-run sixth that gave Baltimore a 9-3 cushion.
Boston scored twice in the ninth to get within one, but Jason Varitek grounded into a double play to end the game with the potential tying run on first.
