Garrard will quarterback Jaguars

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Jacksonville Coach Jack Del Rio announced Friday David Garrard will start at quarterback when the Jaguars open the season next week against Tennessee.

Del Rio said veteran Byron Leftwich would either be traded or released.

Leftwich started the first six games in 2006 before his season was ended by an ankle injury. Del Rio said in February that Leftwich would be the starter this season, but Garrard was eventually more impressive during training camp and the exhibition season.

Garrard has a career record of 10-8 as a starter. Leftwich was the seventh player drafted in 2003 and has a 24-20 record.

He has thrown for 9,042 yards, 51 touchdowns and 36 interceptions.
