Rudd set for milestone auto race

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Aug. 29 (UPI) -- Ricky Rudd will make his 900th start Sunday at the Nextel Cup’s Sharp AQUOS 500 auto race at Fontana, Calif.

Rudd, who has said he plans to retire at season’s end, will reach the milestone near the end of his 32nd year on the NASCAR circuit. He has won 23 races, which have led to more than $38 million in earnings and 29 pole positions.

"I've been fortunate that it's something that I've loved to do, had fun doing and made a good living doing it," he said earlier this season. "It’s really become a young guys' sport: a single guy or a guy that's married and no kids just because there are so many demands on your schedule. I guess I’m not willing to make those sacrifices for that full-time schedule anymore."

The last time his No. 88 Ford grabbed a checkered flag was June 25, 2006, at the Dodge/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma, Calif.
