NEW YORK, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- No. 1 ranked Justine Henin and both of the Williams sisters advanced past the second round Wednesday at the U.S. Open.

Henin, who won this tournament in 2003 and was runner-up to Maria Sharapova last year, needed 68 minutes to storm past Tsvetana Pironkova 6-4, 6-0. Henin will face Ekaterina Makarova in the third round.

Venus Williams, seeded 12th, advanced past Ioana Raluca Olaru 6-4, 6-2. Williams is attempting to add the U.S. Open title to the Wimbledon crown she won in July. She won here in 2000 and 2001.

Serena Williams, the No. 8 seed, won a night match over Maria Elena Camerin 7-5, 6-2.

Fifth-seeded Ana Ivanovic, the French Open runner-up, disposed of Aravane Rezai 6-3, 6-1, while Elena Dementieva, the No. 14 seed, was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Petra Cetkovska.

Sybille Bammer eliminated Meghann Shaughnessy 6-4, 6-3.
