Historic home run balls go on auction

NEW YORK, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- A New York City man said he and a buddy will split the proceeds from the sale of the ball Barry Bonds hit in breaking Hank Aaron's home run record.

Matt Murphy, 21, was traveling to Australia on vacation when he stopped in San Francisco, took in a baseball game and caught Bonds' No. 756 ball at AT&T park on Aug. 7, the Los Angeles Times reported.

SCP Auctions and Sotheby's were to begin an online auction Tuesday for No. 756 and No. 755, Bond's ball that tied Aaron's record and was caught by Adam Hughes, 33, a La Jolla, Calif., plumber, at Petco Park Aug. 4, the Times reported. The auction runs through Sept. 15.

SCP and Sotheby's predict the selling price for No. 756 to reach $500,000 and the price for No. 755 to be at least $300,000.

Murphy told the Times he plans to share his proceeds with the friend who accompanied him to the game while Hughes has yet to say what he would do if his ball sells.
