Vick plea filed in federal court

RICHMOND, Va., Aug. 24 (UPI) -- U.S. prosecutors and attorneys for Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick have filed an agreement in which Vick pleaded guilty to a dogfighting charge.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution said the document was filed Friday in federal court in Richmond, Va. Vick is scheduled to appear before U.S. District Judge Henry Hudson on Monday regarding the plea.

In the agreement, Vick admits to being involved in a dogfighting scheme which involved gambling.

The Washington Post earlier this week reported that the agreement would seek a prison sentence of 12-18 months for Vick. Hudson is not bound by the agreement in his determination of a sentence.

Vick’s attorneys last Monday said the quarterback would plead guilty to a federal charge. The conspiracy charge is related to an alleged dogfighting and gambling operation on property he owned in Virginia.

Three men named in the same indictment as Vick have pleaded guilty in the case. Court documents last week indicated at least one of the co-defendants said Vick killed dogs that didn’t perform well in dogfights.

Vick could still face state charges in the case and the NFL hasn’t announced a decision on when the quarterback would be allowed to rejoin the Falcons.
