
SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- Matt Cain gave up one earned run and eight hits in seven innings Thursday as San Francisco beat the Chicago Cubs, 4-1.
As a batter, he helped himself with a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth.
It was his second homer this season.
San Francisco's Dave Roberts hit a two-run single in the fourth.
Randy Winn had three hits, and Roberts and Guillermo Rodriguez both had two hits for the Giants, who averted a three-game sweep.
Cain (6-13) walked one batter and struck out four, while Brad Hennessey earned his 13th save.
Mike Fontenot knocked in Chicago’s only run with a seventh inning single.
Both he and Ryan Theriot had two hits for the NL Central-leading Cubs, who have split their last 10 games.
Losing pitcher Carlos Zambrano (14-10) surrendered four earned runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings with four walks and four strikeouts.
