FOREST HILLS, N.Y., Aug. 22 (UPI) -- Meilen Tu overcame the rain as well as a one-set deficit Wednesday while advancing to the quarterfinals of the Forest Hills Sony Ericsson Classic.

Tu, the second seed in this 16-player field, defeated Roberta Vinci 4-6, 6-4, 6-0. Rain wiped out the opening day of play Tuesday and also caused two matches to be postponed Wednesday.

The next opponent for Tu will be Nathalie Dechy, who recorded a 6-2, 7-5 decision over Vera Dushevina.

Third-seeded Gisela Dulko got past Yung-Jan Chan 1-6, 6-0, 6-2, and Audra Cohen moved into the quarterfinals when Elena Likhovtseva retired in the second set.

In other first-round action, Elena Vesnina was a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Severine Bremond and Aiko Nakanura won over Alla Kudryavtseva 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.
