ATLANTA, Aug. 19 (UPI) -- Barring last-minute developments, Michael Vick faces a Monday judgment day on felony dogfighting charges.
The Atlanta Falcons quarterback originally was told he had until last Friday to decide whether to stand trial or accept a government-imposed plea deal.
Virginia Attorney General Gerald Poindexter said Friday his office also would prosecute.
Investigators have alleged dogs on Vick’s property in Surry County, Va., were trained for use in fights. Sometimes, if a losing dog survived a fight, it allegedly was killed -- either by drowning, shooting, hanging or other methods
Three co-defendants have made a deal with prosecutors, and have turned against Vick, claiming he financed the dogfighting operation, and drowned several under-performing canines.
The charges have led to Vick’s banishment from Atlanta’s training camp this month, the loss of a large sum of potential product endorsement money, and an outpouring of various opinions about his guilt, innocence and judgment.
The operation, “Bad News Kennelz,” has been disbanded.
