Rain postpones latest Nextel Cup race

BROOKLYN, Mich., Aug. 19 (UPI) -- Heavy, day-long rain Sunday led to the postponement of the Nextel Cup’s 3M Performance 400 auto race in Michigan.

NASCAR and track officials at the Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn waited about five hours Sunday following similar conditions Saturday night before rescheduling again. The biggest problem is forecasters don't offer much hope for Monday, when conditions likely will be the same.

It is the fourth rain-delayed event of the Nextel Cup season, joining Dover, Richmond and Darlington, and a race at Pocono had to be shortened because of rain.

On its Web site, NASCAR.com spokesman Ramsey Poston said the series would work to get the race in this week -- perhaps going even as late as Wednesday if necessary -- to avoid returning to Michigan later in the year, which is not scheduled.http://intranet.upi.com/editorial/edit/20070819-160329-3931/#
