NFL: San Diego 30, St. Louis 13

ST. LOUIS, Aug. 19 (UPI) -- Darren Sproles returned a punt 81 yards for a TD Saturday night as the San Diego Chargers trounced St. Louis, 30-13, in preseason play.

Sproles' heroics came in the final minute of the first half.

Starting quarterback Phillip Rivers threw one scoring toss on 9-for-13 passing for 82 yards. Backup Billy Volek also threw a touchdown pass while going 7-for-10 for 61 yards.

Michael Turner gained 48 yards on nine carries and Germaine Race ran for one touchdown, as the Chargers rose to 1-1 without star running back LaDainian Tomlinson, who did not dress for the contest.

San Diego's Nate Kaeding booted one field goal.

The Rams (1-1) got a touchdown reception from former Virginia quarterback Marques Hagans, now a wide receiver, and Marc Bulger was 8-for-12 for 79 yards.

Bulger's backup, Gus Frerotte, threw the scoring pass and was 16-for-22 for 187 yards.
