NEW YORK, Aug. 19 (UPI) -- Wilson Betemit drove in four runs Sunday as the New York Yankees surged past the Detroit Tigers 9-3.

Betemit hit an RBI single in the seventh, and a three-run double in the eighth.

New York's Johnny Damon had three hits, one a solo homer in the sixth, while Hideki Matsui added three RBI and Andy Phillips had two hits and one RBI. Both Robinson Cano and Bobby Abreu score twice as the Yankees drew within four games of Boston in the AL East.

Winner Chien-Ming Wang (14-6) scattered three earned runs and nine hits over six innings.

Detroit got one RBI each from Magglio Ordonez and Mike Rabelo, and a run scored on a wild pitch. Rabelo had three hits, and Ryan Rayburn two for the Tigers, who have lost four of five.

Loser Jeremy Bonderman (10-6) surrendered four runs -- three earned -- on seven hits and five walks in six innings. He struck out five Yankees.
