OAKLAND, Calif., Aug. 18 (UPI) -- Emil Brown capped off a four-run first with a two-run homer Friday night, sparking the Kansas City Royals to a 9-2 victory over Oakland.
The Athletics had won four straight, one shy of their longest winning streak of the season.
Brian Bannister (11-8) went the distance for the Royals, allowing two runs on four hits. He bounced back from a difficult outing against Toronto last Sunday, and has posted a 4-1 record in his last six starts, having gone at least seven innings in all of them.
The loss went to Dan Meyer (0-1), who made his first major league start. His only two previous appearances in the majors were in relief for Atlanta three years ago.
Meyer gave up six runs on five hits in four innings.
Esteban German reached on an error to start the first, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored on a triple by Mark Grudzielanek. Billy Butler doubled in Grudzielanek and Brown homered to center one out later.
