Will MacKenzie leads Wyndham Championship

GREENSBORO, N.C., Aug. 16 (UPI) -- Will MacKenzie, who once left golf for extreme outdoor sports, took the lead Thursday after the opening round of the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, N.C.

This is the last "regular season" event of the year on the PGA Tour and will determine the field for next week's start of the month-long FedEx Cup.

MacKenzie took up kayaking and snowboarding when he grew tired of golf in his early 20s, but he returned to the circuit last year and promptly won the Reno-Tahoe Open.

He shot a 64 at the Forest Oaks Country Club to take a one-shot lead over Lucas Glover -- who earlier this week was named to the American Presidents Cup team by captain Jack Nicklaus.

Jeff Overton, Brian Davis and Steve Marino were tied with Glover in second place.

The top 144 on the FedEx Cup points list will begin the chase for a $10 million annuity at the Barclays next week, a tournament to be played at the Westchester Country Club in New York.
