Strange leads the Scandinavian Masters

MALMO, Sweden, Aug. 16 (UPI) -- Scott Strange shot 6-under 64 Thursday afternoon to grab a one-shot lead after the first round of the European Tour's Scandinavian Masters at Malmo, Sweden.

Strange arrived at the course just 45 minutes before the round started because he thought he was the tournament’s first alternate. The 30-year-old native of Australia raced to the Arlandastad Golf Course after he received a phone call telling him he was in the field.

"As soon as I got the call on the bus, we ran into a traffic jam and the bus driver would just not go over the speed limit," he said.

Strange did not have the luxury of a practice round because his clubs did not arrive at the course until Wednesday morning.

Amateur Fredrik Qvicker, a sophomore at the University of Tennessee, is tied for second with England's Sam Walker at 5-under 65.
