OAKLAND, Calif., Aug. 14 (UPI) -- San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds, now baseball’s home run king, hired two prominent lawyers to defend his reputation from steroids accusations.
“Barry is basically saying that he has been kicked around a lot and he is tired of being kicked around,” Oakland attorney John Burris told the Oakland Tribune Monday. “Our issue is really about statements that are made that are attributed to him that are not true. Particularly, statements that someone might say he made about the use of steroids or tax evasion.”
Burris and San Francisco attorney Todd Schneider announced in a statement they had been retained to represent Bonds, who was linked to the 2003 BALCO steroids scandal, the San Jose (Calif.) Mercury News reported.
Last year, a book written by two San Francisco Chronicle reporters claimed Bonds had used performance enhancing drugs for at least five years beginning in 1998.
With 758 home runs and 2,919 hits, Bonds has indicted he may retire before reaching 3,000 career hits.
