Schnyder, Golovin win Rogers Cup openers

TORONTO, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- Patty Schnyder of Switzerland and Tatiana Golovin of France were among Monday's first-round winners at the $1.34 million Rogers Cup.

Schnyder defeated Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-3, 6-2,and Golovin defeated Ukrainian Julia Vakulenko 6-2, 6-1.

Israeli Shahar Peer advanced by beating Dutchwoman Michaella Krajicek 7-5, 7-6 (9-7) and Slovenian Katarina Srebotnik beat Ukrainian Kateryna Bondarenko 5-7, 6-2, 6-2.

Serbian Ana Ivanovic defeated Swiss Martina Hingis in last year's Rogers Cup final in Montreal. This event shifts between Montreal and Toronto each year.
