Donnelly having season-ending surgery

BOSTON, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Brendan Donnelly will undergo season-ending surgery Tuesday on his right arm, the team said Monday.

The procedure, known as ligament replacement, will be performed by Dr. Lewis Yocum in Inglewood, Calif.

Boston originally placed Donnelly on the 15-day disabled list June 17 retroactive to June 11, with what was termed a right forearm muscle strain. However, after consulting with Yocum in July, it was determined the injury was more serious than previously thought.

Donnelly, a right-hander, made 27 relief appearances this season, posting a 2-1 record with a 3.05 ERA. Over a six-year career with the Los Angeles Angels and Red Sox, Donnelly is 25-9 with a 2.88 ERA in 303 games.
