Berdych, Ljubicic win in openers in Ohio

MASON, Ohio, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- Tomas Berdych and Ivan Ljubicic were first-round winners Monday at the $2.45 million Western & Southern Financial Group Masters.

Berdych beat Benjamin Becker 6-3, 6-4 and Ljubicic beat Amer Delic 1-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.

In other night action, David Ferrer eliminated John Isner 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 and Sam Querrey ousted Marc Gicquel 7-5, 5-7, 6-4.

Russian Mikhail Youzhny advanced with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Slovakian Dominik Hrbaty.

German Nicolas Kiefer defeated two-time major titlist and former world No. 1 Marat Safin of Russia 6-3, 7-6 (7-1), and former No. 1 Carlos Moya bested former Tennis Masters Cup champ David Nalbandian 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-2).
