Tiger Woods wins the PGA Championship

TULSA, Okla., Aug. 12 (UPI) -- Tiger Woods shot a closing 1-under-par 69 Sunday afternoon to win the PGA Championship at Tulsa, Okla., for a two-stroke victory over Woody Austin.

Woods started the final round with a three-shot lead and held steady in the face of a final round challenge at Southern Hills by both Austin and Ernie Els.

His 72-hole total of 8-under 272 gave him his first major tournament victory this season -- and the 13th of his career -- in an event played in oppressive Oklahoma heat.

"I got it done somehow down the stretch,” Woods said after earning the winner's check of $1.26 million. "I felt great all week. Other guys may have gotten tired but I feel fine."

The win was Woods' fifth title this season, his second consecutive PGA Championship and his fourth PGA crown overall. He has successfully defended the title twice.

Austin (67) was alone in second place at 6-under 274, and Els (66) finished third at 5-under 275.
