Cardinals' Spiezio goes on restricted list

ST. LOUIS, Mo., Aug. 9 (UPI) -- The St. Louis Cardinals Thursday put infielder Scott Spiezio on Major League Baseball's restricted list due to an apparent substance abuse problem.

A Cardinals' publicist said Spiezio came to the team to discuss problems concerning substances he was taking. The club's medical staff was unaware of the situation until Spiezio came forward and the team didn't specify what Spiezio has been taking.

"It speaks highly of Scott to come forward, admitting recognition of a potential problem. This allows the organization to provide him access to the appropriate resources for further evaluation and treatment," said team medical director Dr. George Paletta.

It was not known when Spiezio would return to the team.
