NEW YORK, Aug. 7 (UPI) -- Jeff Francoeur went 4-for-5 with a three-run home run Tuesday, propelling the Atlanta Braves to a 7-3 win over the New York Mets.
Matt Diaz also homered and Chipper Jones went 3-for-5 with a double, triple and two runs scored for the Braves, who have won seven of 10 contests with the Mets this season and moved within 3 1/3 games of New York for the lead in the division.
Buddy Carlyle (7-3) earned the victory after giving up three runs on six hits over five innings. Ron Mahay, Octavio Dotel, Rafael Soriano and Peter Moylan each pitched a hitless inning.
Atlanta has won six of its last eight games.
Mets pitcher Oliver Perez (10-8) gave up six runs on 10 hits over five innings to suffer his first loss to Atlanta this season. Perez had beaten Atlanta three times in 2007.
David Newhan had a pinch-hit RBI triple and Jose Reyes drove in a run for New York.
