CARSON, Calif., Aug. 6 (UPI) -- Austrian Sybille Bammer, a 27-year-old mother, was among Monday's first-round winners at the $600,000 East West Bank Classic.

Bammer defeated American Laura Granville 6-4, 6-2.

France's Tatiana Golovin was forced out of her first-round match with Thailand's Tamarine Tanasugarn, retiring in the second set with a right hamstring strain. Tanasugarn won the first set 7-5 before Golovin had to quit.

Alona Bondarenko was beaten by fellow Ukrainian Yuliana Fedak 1-6, 6-2, 6-3. However, Bondarenko's sister, Kateryna, posted a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Germany's Angelique Kerber.

Czech Lucie Safarova beat Russian Olga Poutchkova 7-5, 6-2.

This week's top seeds are last week's San Diego titlist Maria Sharapova of Russia, Serbian Jelena Jankovic and French Open runner-up Ana Ivanovic, also of Serbia. Jankovic was last year's runner-up here to Russian Elena Dementieva.
