MLB: NY Yankees 7, Kansas City 1

NEW YORK, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- Alex Rodriguez failed once more in his bid to reach 500 home runs, but he contributed one RBI Friday night as the New York Yankees defeated Kansas City, 7-1.

Robinson Cano homered and Melky Cabrera's fluke double delivered two runs to help the Yankees win for the fourth time in five games.

Chien-Ming Wang (13-5) allowed seven hits and a run in seven-plus innings. He has won 10 of his last 11 decisions.

Rodriguez is poised to become the youngest player by far to reach 500 home runs for a career, but he had to settle for an RBI on a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

Odalis Perez (6-10) gave up eight hits and four runs in five innings to take the loss.

New York scored three times in the sixth to take a 6-1 lead with Cabrera's hit highlighting the inning.

With the bases loaded, Cabrera hit a line drive off the shoe of Kansas City relief pitcher Ryan Braun. The ball caromed all the way into the stands along the first-base line.

Under the rules, that is a double with each runner moving up two bases.
