Royals-Twins game postponed

MINNEAPOLIS, Aug. 2 (UPI) -- The game between the Kansas City Royals and Minnesota Twins scheduled for Thursday afternoon was postponed because of the bridge collapse in Minneapolis.

The Interstate 35W bridge spanned the Mississippi River about six blocks from the Metrodome, where Thursday's game was scheduled to be played. It fell Wednesday evening, killing at least four people and injuring about 80. As many as 30 people were missing as of noon Thursday.

In addition to the game postponement, team and local officials delayed Thursday's scheduled groundbreaking ceremony that would have marked the beginning of construction on a new ballpark for the Twins.

The postponed game is expected to be made up when the Royals return to Minneapolis Aug. 31-Sept. 2.

Minnesota is to host the Cleveland Indians for a four-game series beginning Friday night but Twins officials said the schedule for those game could change.

Kansas City heads to New York for a three-game weekend set with the Yankees.
