Ochoa, ranked No. 1 in the world, was out front of Louise Friberg and In-Bee Park, who shared second place after shooting 69s. The par at St. Andrews was changed from 72 to 73 this week by converting the difficult 17th hole to a par-5.

Ai Miyazato and Rebecca Hudson were at 70 while Annika Sorenstam, looking for her first victory since overcoming back problems earlier this year, opened with a 72. Defending champion Sherri Steinhauer also shot 72.

Michelle Wie, who has struggled this year with a wrist injury and high scores, fired a 73 and was tied for 21st.
