RENO, Nev., Aug. 2 (UPI) -- Steve Flesch, seeking his first victory in three years, eagled two holes Thursday and shot a 9-under 63 to lead after the opening round of the Reno-Tahoe Open.
With most of the PGA Tour's top stars playing in the World Golf Championship tournament in Ohio, Flesch eagled the par-5 fourth and par-5 11th at the Monterey Golf and Country Club. It was his lowest round of the year.
He had a one-shot lead over Jose Coheres and a two-shot advantage over Steve Allan and John Merrick.
The leading player in the yearlong points race competing here this week is Jeff Quinn, who ranks 34th. He shot a 71 Thursday.
The most recent of Flesh's two PGA Tour wins came at the 2004 Colonial Invitation. His best finish this season has been a tie for fifth in Milwaukee.
