
SAN DIEGO, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- Martina Hingis knocked off Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands in the second round of the Acura Classic Tuesday but the 18-year-old went down fighting.
Hingis scored the first 14 points of the second-round match for a 4-0 lead in the first set but Krajicek battled back to win five of the next six games. Hingis pulled out a 7-5 win in the first set and then eliminated the young player with a 6-2 win in the second set.
The seventh-seeded Swiss player converted on six of 12 point opportunities during the match, which lasted 1 hour and 42 minutes.
In other second-round matches Tuesday, second-seeded Jelena Jankovic defeated Vania King 6-3, 6-0; Nadia Petrova, seeded fourth, knocked off Elena Bovina 6-3, 7-5; and fifth-seeded Marion Bartoli ousted Aiko Nakamura 7-6 (7-4), 6-1.
