
STOCKHOLM, Sweden, July 31 (UPI) -- No. 1-seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues posted a straight-set victory Tuesday in the first round of the $145,000 Nordic Light Open tennis tournament in Sweden.
Medina Garrigues was able to get by Sandra Kloesel 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) and advance to the second round of the hard-court tournament.
However, fourth-seeded Kaia Kanepi and No. 9-seeded Maria Elena Camerin were both upset by qualifiers Tuesday. Kanepi dropped a 7-6 (12-10), 3-6, 6-3 match to Youlia Fedossova and Camerin was beaten 7-5, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4 by Julia Goerges.
No. 6-seeded Elena Vesnina was among the winners Tuesday, defeating local favorite Sofia Arvidsson 6-1, 6-3.
Also Tuesday, Virginia Ruano Pascual topped Chin-Wei Chan 6-4, 3-6, 6-2; Anna-Lena Groenefeld swept past Iveta Benesova 6-0, 6-2; and Marta Domachowska beat Petra Kvitova 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Additional first-round wins were posted by Dominika Cibulkova, Emma Laine, Stephanie Cohen-Aloro and Caroline Wozniacki.
