Report: Nike suspends Vick shoe deal

PORTLAND, Ore., July 27 (UPI) -- Nike Inc. Friday suspended its shoe endorsement contract with Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick, The (Portland) Oregonian reported.

Vick has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Richmond, Va., on illegal dog-fighting charges. He and three others entered not guilty pleas Thursday in U.S. District Court before being arraigned.

Nike spokesman Alan Marks in Beaverton, Ore., confirmed the suspension, telling the newspaper the suspension is without pay.

"As we've said, we've just continued to monitor the situation," Marks added.

Athletic apparel company Reebok International Ltd. suspended sales of Vick's jerseys. Reebok is the official supplier of apparel and equipment to all 32 NFL teams, but does not have a contract with Vick individually.

The charges stem from an operation conducted at a house Vick owned in Smithfield, Va.

Vick is due back in court Nov. 26. His passport was confiscated to prevent him from leaving the country.
