Bonds tries to deflect critics

SAN FRANCISCO, July 27 (UPI) -- San Francisco's Barry Bonds will continue his quest to become baseball's all-time home run leader after criticisms this week by Bob Costas and Curt Schilling.

Costas, a sportscaster, and Schilling, a Boston Red Sox pitcher, took separate shots at the San Francisco Giants' slugger on the "Costas Now" program on HBO Sports.

Bonds charged Costas with "irresponsible journalism" for his comments and interviews.

"He would have been a first-ballot Hall of Famer even before he started juicing," Costas said.

"If someone wrote that stuff about me and I didn't sue, am I not admitting that there's some legitimacy to it," Schilling said.

"I take great offense to those statements," Bonds said.

Bonds went homerless in a four-game series against Atlanta and enters Friday night's game against Florida needing three home runs to overtake Hank Aaron's total of 755 home runs.

He has hit 19 homers this season.
