MLB: Washington 7, Philadelphia 6

PHILADELPHIA, July 26 (UPI) -- Jesus Flores hit a three-run home run in the top of the eighth inning Thursday afternoon as the Washington Nationals edged Philadelphia, 7-6.

Flores' second homer this season helped Washington overcome an early 5-1 deficit.

Washington's Felipe Lopez had two hits, including a two-run single in the seventh. Austin Kearns and Dmitri Young had one RBI each, and four players had two hits for the Nationals, who averted a three-game sweep.

Rookie starter John Lannan was ejected for hitting Philadelphia's Chase Utley and Ryan Howard with fastballs in his major league debut.

The winner was Jon Rauch (6-2).

Closer Chad Cordero recorded his 20th save.

Philadelphia got Howard's two-run homer in the second, Pat Burrell's two-run single in the fifth, and RBI by Utley in the first and Chris Coste in the ninth.

Burrell had three hits and Utley had two hits for the Phillies, who had a five-game winning streak snapped.

The loser was Jose Mesa (1-3).
