Hunter Mahan shoots 62 at Canadian Open

MARKHAM, Ontario, July 26 (UPI) -- Hunter Mahan holed out from the fairway twice Thursday, made three eagles and took a two-shot lead after one round of the Canadian Open.

Mahan shot a 9-under 62 over the Angus Glen Golf Club's South Course, equaling the lowest first-round total ever produced in the 103-year-old event.

Alone in second at 64 was Steve Allan, while Tripp Isenhour and David Hearn were tied for third at 65.

Among the top attractions in the tournament, Vijay Singh shot a 68 and Jim Furyk a 69.

Mahan's first eagle came at his second hole, the par-5 11th, where he reached the green in two and holed a 10-foot putt.

He holed his second shot from 189 yards with a 6-iron at the par-4 18th, and then made another eagle at the short, par-4 ninth when his sand wedge from 81 yards found the cup.

"It was crazy," he said. "Two hole-outs on the fairway. I've never done that before. To have the lowest first round in the history of the tournament, that is pretty special. Especially a tournament like this that's been around forever."
