BOISE, Idaho, July 26 (UPI) -- Boise State running back Ian Johnson has tightened security for his pending wedding to long-time girlfriend after receiving death threats.
Johnson is black and Chrissy Popadics, a former Boise State cheerleader, is white.
He proposed marriage on the field after scoring the winning touchdown in Boise State's 43-42 upset of Oklahoma at the Fiesta Bowl Jan. 2.
The pair is to be married Saturday in Boise but Johnson told the Idaho Statesman this week he and Popadics have received threats, which led to an increase of security personnel for the occasion.
"My goal for the rest of my life is to be a great husband and if football was to get in the way of that, then football would have to go," Johnson said at this week's Media Preview Day for the Western Athletic Conference. "We're going to make sure we're safe at all times. It's an amazing day for us and we'd hate to have it ruined."
