
STANFORD, Calif., July 24 (UPI) -- Katarina Srebotnik bested Olga Poutchkova in straight sets Monday at the $600,000 Bank of the West Classic.
Srebotnik took the first set 6-3, then followed up with a 6-4 win in the second to advance.
In a matchup of Americans, Meilen Tu defeated Meghann Shaughnessy 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 in first-round action.
In other first-round matches, Eleni Daniilidou downed Amber Liu 4-6, 7-5, 6-1; Shuai Peng cruised past Elena Bovina 6-3, 6-4; and Lilia Osterloh outlasted fellow American Jill Craybas 6-2, 7-5.
This week's top seeds are Russian Anna Chakvetadze and Wimbledon runner-up Marion Bartoli of France. Chakvetadze was last week's champion in Cincinnati. Bartoli lost to Venus Williams at the All England Club three weeks ago.
Belgian Kim Clijsters, who retired earlier this season, beat Swiss Patty Schnyder in last year's Bank of the West finale.
