CARSON, Calif., July 21 (UPI) -- LA Galaxy fans had to wait until the 78th minute Saturday night, but David Beckham made his MLS debut in a 1-0 loss to Chelsea in an international friendly.
Beckham did not start for the Galaxy because of an injured left ankle. He arrived at the arena about 90 minutes before the game but didn't come out of the locker room until just before kickoff -- when he drew the attention of virtually every camera in the place.
He set off another round of picture-taking when he came into the game with the Galaxy down 1-0.
Beckham played the final 13 minutes, getting eight touches -- including a corner kick in the closing seconds.
"I'm not fit," said Beckham after the match. "I haven't trained since I got here, but it's nice to be out there."
The sold-out crowd included celebrities such as Sharon Stone, Drew Carey and Calif. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Chelsea's John Terry scored the game's lone goal.
