Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., July 19 (UPI) -- Lorena Ochoa and Annika Sorenstam survived, but many top players lost Thursday at the HSBC Women's World Match Play Championship in New Rochelle, N.Y.
Ochoa, seeded No. 1 in the tourney, recorded an easy 6&5 victory over Ashleigh Simon as first-round play got under way at the Wykagyl Country Club.
Sorenstam, meanwhile, had to go 20 holes before defeating Katherine Hull, who suffered a double bogey to lose the match.
Among the upset victims were Karrie Webb, newly crowned U.S. Women's Open champion Cristie Kerr, Morgan Pressel, Juli Inkster and defending champion Brittany Lincicome.
Charlotte Mayorkas scored a 1-up victory over Webb. Amy Hung was a 5&4 winner over Kerr, Birdie Kim put together a 2-up win over Pressel and Carin Koch knocked out Lincicome, 4&3.
Inkster, a Solheim Cup veteran who has an outstanding match-play record, was a 4&3 victim of Hye Jung Choi.
