MILWAUKEE, July 19 (UPI) -- Jeff Maggert and Brendan de Jonge shared the lead Thursday after the opening round of the U.S. Bank Championship at Milwaukee.
They both turned in a 7-under 63 over the Brown Deer Park course as they try to take advantage of the absence of the PGA Tour's leading stars.
With most of the big names in Scotland for the British Open, Maggert embarked on his bid to win for the fourth time on the tour. De Jonge is looking for his first tour title.
Garrett Willis was alone in third at 64 while Jay Williamson and Robert Gamez shot 65.
Maggert's round was highlighted by an eagle at the par-5 15th. He played the last four holes in 4-under and owns at least a share of the first-round lead for the first time in four years. He has missed the cut in his last four starts.
