Muller advances past second round

PALERMO, Italy, July 18 (UPI) -- Martina Muller, who at No. 2 is the highest seeded player left in the tournament, reached the quarterfinals Wednesday at the Internazionali Open.

Muller was a 6-2, 6-1 victor over Conchita Martinez Granados at the clay court event, in which top-seeded Michaella Krajicek was upset in the opening round.

Also earning spots in the quarterfinals Wednesday were Sara Errani, a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Eva Birnerova, and Flavia Pennetta, who eliminated Edina Gallovits 6-3, 6-1.

In the quarterfinals, Muller will face either Lourdes Dominguez Lino or Sorana Cirstea.
