Sampras, Sanchez-Vicario into Hall of Fame

NEWPORT, R.I., July 14 (UPI) -- Pete Sampras and Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario were inducted Saturday into the International Tennis Hall of Fame at Newport, R.I.

Sampras, who retired after the 2002 U.S. Open, was a 14-time Grand Slam singles champion, including seven titles at Wimbledon, two Australian Open titles and five titles at the U.S. Open.

He was honored as the ATP Player of the Year from 1993-98, a record six consecutive years, and won the ATP World Championships five times -- a record he shares with Ivan Lendl.

"I never thought I'd win as many majors as I did," he said this week. "As a kid, you dream about winning Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, but you never really think it's going to happen."

Sanchez-Vicario was one of the leading ladies in Spanish tennis. She captured the French Open in 1989, '94 and '98, and was the first Spanish woman to win the U.S. Open in 1994.
