Johnson was back on the pitch for the Wizards for the first time since leaving in early June to play for the U.S. National Team in the Gold Cup and Copa America tournaments. He scored after a pass from Jose Burciaga Jr., picking up his own rebound off the post and sticking the ball into an open net after beating RSL goalie Nick Rimando one-on-one.
With 10 goals in 10 games, Johnson is tied with D.C. United's Luciano Emilio for the league scoring lead.
Kansas City (7-5-4) moved up from a fourth-place tie with Columbus to take second place in the Eastern Conference, one point behind New England.
Rimando finished with six saves for Real Salt Lake (1-8-6), which was shut out for a second straight game -- and for the eighth time this season.
Kevin Hartman posted his fourth shutout of the season for the Wizards.
Kansas City is at Colorado July 22. Real Salt Lake is at home vs. New England July 28.
